As fall rapidly approaches, many patients want to get rid of residual sun damage that’s occurred over the summer. Many of you have heard of laser skin resurfacing at our Albany, NY, plastic surgery center; however, we also offer something called a South Beach Peel, which combines the power of BBL™ photo rejuvenation therapy and a MicroLaserPeel®. Let’s look at some details about this transformative treatment.
Who Are the Best Candidates?
The South Beach Peel is a 2-part process designed specifically for patients looking to slough off sun-damaged skin, improve tone and texture, and treat dark spots, fine lines, and wrinkles.
Part I: BBL™ Photo Rejuvenation
BBL stands for BroadBand Light and is a type of intense pulsed light technology that treats sun and age spots as well as vascular issues and rosacea. BBL works by treating the upper layers of the dermis to stimulate your skin cells, which helps to restore your skin to a more youthful state. During treatment, you will feel warm as the light energy is absorbed deep in your skin. You may feel a gentle snapping sensation, like a rubber band being snapped against your sin. The entire BBL portion will take about 15 to 30 minutes.
Part II: MicroLaserPeel®
During the second phase of your South Beach Peel, we will pass the MicroLaserPeel handpiece over the treatment area as quick pulses of laser energy are emitted. This energy will heat up the moisture in your skin and vaporize certain areas of the epidermis. This allows new cells to take the place of damaged skin. As with the BBL treatment, most patients compare the feeling of the laser treatment to tiny rubber band snaps. This phase of your South Beach Peel typically takes up to 45 minutes.
What Is Recovery Like?
Recovery time can vary, especially because each patient is unique and they will have a customized treatment where the depth of the laser is tailored to their needs. With that said, healing usually will take a few days, so many people have their South Beach Peel on a Thursday or Friday and return to work the following Monday. Usually, immediately after the treatment, it looks like you have a slight sunburn, but this will begin to fade after about 3 days and can be covered by makeup by day 4.
What Results Can You Expect?
The BBL therapy will trigger collagen growth, providing you with smoother, healthier skin, while the MicroLaserPeel portion of the treatment can significantly lighten areas of sun damage, acne scars, keratoses, and pigmented lesions. Overall, the treatment enhances collagen and melanin, which leaves your skin more youthful and refreshed. Using a board-certified plastic surgeon for this type of aggressive skin treatment will also ensure you get the best results that meet your aesthetic goals.
Maintaining Your Results
You can prolong your results by most effectively by staying out of the sun. This is especially true during the weeks after your treatment, when your skin will be more susceptible to sun damage. Make sure to protect your skin with sunscreen, hats, and shade. It is also a good idea to follow a skincare regimen that fits your specific needs and will extend your results.
